Laboratory for [Living] Tree [as] Architecture
Transdisciplinary research laboratory at 14+ universities and symposium at 19th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.
LABT for short
Initiator - Lithuanian Pavilion “Archi / Tree / tecture” at the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale - La Biennale di Venezia.
Produced by - Architects association of Lithuania.
Organized by - Vytautas Magnus University together with Transform4Europe Alliance, Culture Platform 3022 and Center of Excellence Forest 4.0 .
Thematic focus
Problem question: How can we create climate-neutral cities by cherishing the wellness of not simply humans, but of all species, especially plants?

Extended problem statement

European Green Deal Climate neutrality by 2050 brings an unprecedented challenge of urban, social, economical, and political redesign. Limited Perspectives While initiatives like "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030" and “The New European Bauhaus” set meaningful goals, they often sidestep deeper issues like climate justice, techno-solutionism, or extractivist “ecological modernisation”. Call from Venice The curatorial statement of 19th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia calls for decentering anthropocentric and modernist perspectives by exploring a manifold of intelligences.

"Tree" - both a victim and an empowering symbol

On one hand, the paradigms of “ecological modernisation” or smart-cities predominantly see the green infrastructure as resources or quasi-technical solutions to various problems - both economical, environmental, and social. On the other hand, as highlighted by the Lithuanian pavilion at 19th International Architecture Exhibition “Archi / Tree / tecture”, “Tree” is a powerful archetypal image that guards biodiversity, connects different spiritual domains, stabilizes chaos and climate change, embodies order, growth, and holds the essence of local identities - everything associated with the imaginaries of carbon-neutral futures. The “Tree” asks us to critically investigate, think symbiotically, and seek for continuous growth.

Main information
The aim of the project is to establish a transdisciplinary & international student laboratory that would rethink ecological practices from posthumanist perspective, ultimately expressing all its outputs in a Symposium at 19th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.

Research Tracks

Trees as Architectural Allies This track explores how to create forms of architecture that would follow ecological networks and integrate trees through a symbiotic approach, beyond treating them as mere objects. It aims to develop bio-informed architectural, engineering, and material science proposals, while exploring collaborative opportunities with natural sciences, particularly ecology, biology, and medicine. From Smart Cities to Living Ecosystems This track investigates how digital network technologies can transform cities into resilient and sustainable multi-species ecosystems. It aims to develop software and hardware experiments, informed by climate sciences, biology, and architecture. Cosmologies of Human and More-than-Human Cohabitation This track examines how current sociocultural contracts can be changed to create inclusive and just urban environments that fully account for the interconnectedness of humans and more-than-humans in their living environments. It aims to develop territorially sensitive, locally grounded social designs, integrating diverse knowledge from ethnography, biology, sociology, anthropology, animal semiotics, and architecture.

Outputs

The symposium will only accommodate presentations and workshops. Regardless of that, the forms of the projects can take any shapes possible: from photography exhibitions to architectural blueprints, from digital magazines to podcast series. The laboratory cherishes all types of work: everything from pure theoretical research to experiments in design, to artistic endeavors. Diversity and creative freedom is of upmost importance. Reference for potential style of symposium expression: streamart. Knowledge Entrepreneurship This laboratory seeks to formulate pragmatic outcomes, ultimately helping to achieve the European Green Deal. Through its research tracks, focus on mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration, LABT creates a platform for participants to transform theoretical knowledge into actionable solutions for environmental and urban challenges. Problem-solving focus Each research track tackles pressing, real-world issues, encouraging participants to think creatively and practically about implementing their ideas in the real world. Social & environmental responsibility The project seeks to cultivate a changemaker mindset for its participants, ultimately leading to a positive impact on the world. Transdisciplinary knowledge creation The project pushes the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines, encouraging students and researchers to explore uncharted territories by utilizing advanced remote collaboration tools, fostering a creative and communal environment. International platform for collaboration The project creates a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and future entrepreneurial ventures within a global context, with events at the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial 2025 and the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025.

How to participate?

Extended timeline

Stage Time Process Online element 1 - Independent work Autumn and spring terms (November 2024 - April 2025) Students develop coursework within the thematic confines of a selected research track. The tutor of the course can also decide to focus on only one specific research track. Preferably, students work individually. 4+ students are selected to the next stage by the mentor. The exact amount of students depends on mobility funding granted by the institution, Erasmus+ and other sources. Monthly group meetings will be held, connecting all the participating universities into keynote presentations, discussions and online workshops. 1 - Creathon Online / Saint-Etienne May 19 - June 7, 2025 All the students present their developed projects along keynote speeches. International & transdisciplinary teams are formed, blending students from different institutions into new groups based on their thematic correspondences. Creathon will take place online May 29 - June 7 2 - Online international project development June - September 2025 Project development within newly formed international teams. Each team will have at least 1 mentor assigned to them. Mentors will lead groupwork meetings on at least weekly basis. 2 - Symposium at Archi / Tree / tecture September 22 - 28, 2025 Teams present their work during a week-long symposium at Lithuanian pavilion, 19th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia. In case limited mobility opportunities, online participation will also be possible. The event will be streamed online utilizing streamart format. 3 - Legacy assurance October - December 2025 Based on outputs presented in the Symposium, a digital book will be prepared along with other publications and academic papers. Next to that, an international Blended-Intensive Erasmus+ study subject will be formed, possibly extending to an international study program operating within Trasform4Europe University alliance. Online discussions, reflecting on the laboratory, deriving insight and assuring legacy for developed projects.
